Never too Experienced to Learn: Why Elite Stylists Keep Investing In their Hair Extensions Training

Even award- winning stylists go back to the classroom. Our Creative Director shares why advanced hair extensions training keeps you ahead of the game.

Andrew Barton, after more than two decades as Racoon’s Creative Director, presenting shows and seminars around the world, one thing still surprises him. The stylists at the very top (the award winners, the names everyone follows) are the ones who keep booking themselves back into training. Ask them about their hair extensions work, and the conversation almost always comes back to the same place: the education that got them there, and the brand they trust to keep them there.

So Andrew took his own advice. He stepped back into the classroom at the Racoon Academy with Louise Cahill, our Global Head of Technical Education. Here’s why it turned out to be one of the most valuable days he had spent in years, and what it could mean for your salon.

Why the best stylists never stop learning

As a global hair artist and educator, I’m constantly amazed by how many award-winning, high-profile stylists tell me about their journey with Racoon professional hair extensions, and how the right education inspired them to excel.

Their stories deserve to be told. Sharing that passion is how we inspire the next generation of stylists to build elite technical skills, expert industry knowledge and the confidence to recommend the right hair extensions for every client.

Taking time out of a busy salon schedule to invest in an advanced hair extension course, or to refresh techniques you learned years ago, is in our DNA as hairdressers. We all strive to be best in class.

Professional hair extensions are built on trust

Investing in hair extensions training from industry leaders is a wise career move, but ultimately, it comes down to trust. Your clients trust you with their hair, so you need to be able to trust the hair, the systems and the education behind them.

Two decades as Racoon’s Creative Director

That deep-rooted reliability is why I have proudly worked with Racoon for over two decades, serving as Creative Director. Racoon has supplied premium human hair extensions to the professional hairdressing industry from its UK headquarters for more than 30 years. The hair is root point correct, cuticle intact and ethically sourced, and that consistency is what lets stylists create results they’re proud to put their name to.

Back in the classroom at the Racoon Academy

With that in mind, I recently stepped back into the classroom with Louise Cahill, Racoon’s Global Head of Technical Education, at the Racoon Academy. It was a hugely rewarding day, and a reminder of just how vital continuous education and upskilling in hair extensions are to staying at the top of our game.

What we covered on the day

“Even with years of experience behind me, revisiting the fundamentals of fitting and removal showed me how much the small refinements matter: placement, tension and finish are what separate a good set of hair extensions from an undetectable one. Louise has a gift for breaking down technique so that even the most experienced stylist walks away seeing their work with fresh eyes. On the day I refreshed my skills in the four Racoon hair extension applications – Luxe Tape, Luxe Bond, Luxe Link and Luxe Weave.”

Louise- Head Of Technical Education “We had an amazing day- Andrew was keen to ensure that his skillset was at the best level needed to deliver a flawless finish. His energy, enthusiasm and humility during the day was a constant reminder that we are all never too experienced to learn”.

What I took back to the salon floor

“I left with renewed confidence, a few refined habits and a reminder that clients notice when we’re working at our best. That’s the real return on hair extensions training: better results, happier clients and a column that stays full”

Why advanced hair extensions training matters for your clients

Clients today are better informed than ever. They ask about hair health, they compare methods and they expect a flawless colour match. Ongoing training gives you the answers, and the confidence to deliver them.

Damage-free fitting and removal

Racoon’s four hair extension systems have been uniquely developed and scientifically proven by an independent trichologist to keep natural hair safe and damage free. Each system is designed to be easily fitted and safely removed by professionally trained, Racoon certified stylists. That last part matters: a system is only as good as the hands applying it, which is why technique refreshers are so valuable.

Consultation and colour matching

A confident consultation is where every great set of hair extensions begins. Knowing which system suits your client’s hair, lifestyle and goals is a skill that grows with every course. Add a wide range of standard shades and Racoon’s bespoke colour matching service from its UK-based hair lab, and you can blend invisibly with your client’s natural hair every time.

How to choose the right hair extension course

Not all hair extension courses are equal. Before you book, ask:

  • Who is teaching? Look for educators with real salon, editorial and show experience.
  • Is the system proven to protect natural hair? Independent testing gives you, and your clients, peace of mind.
  • Will you be certified? Certification shows clients you’ve been trained to the brand’s standard.
  • What support is there afterwards? Ongoing education and refresher training keep your skills current.
  • What is the quality of the hair? Your technique deserves premium, ethically sourced hair that performs.

Hair extensions training FAQs

Do I need to be a qualified hairdresser to train in hair extensions?

To train and start your extension journey with Racoon International you will need to have passed your NVQ level 2 in hairdressing. The entry level gives you the opportunity to immediately access one of the four foundational hair extension application courses from Racoon.

Can hair extensions damage natural hair?

When the right system is fitted and removed correctly, they shouldn’t. Racoon’s four systems are scientifically proven by an independent trichologist to keep natural hair safe and damage free when applied by a professionally trained, Racoon certified stylist.

How often should I refresh my hair extensions training?

There’s no fixed rule, but a refresher is worth booking whenever new techniques are introduced, when you haven’t worked with a particular system for a while, or simply when you want to raise your standards. As this blog shows, nobody is too experienced to learn.

What makes Racoon hair extensions different?

Racoon has supplied professional hair extensions from the UK for over 30 years. The hair is premium, root point correct, cuticle intact and ethically sourced, backed by four trichologist-tested systems and a bespoke colour-matching service.
